Tuckpointing & Repointing

Mortar is the part of a masonry wall that is meant to wear out first. Over decades, weather erodes it, and open joints let water into the wall. Repointing removes the failed mortar to a safe depth, cleans the joints and packs in fresh mortar in layers, then tools the joints so they shed water and match the original look.

Matching matters. Using mortar that is harder than the brick or stone can crack the units, so we test the old mortar and choose a mix that is softer than the masonry around it. In Nashville, where older brick homes often have soft historic brick, getting the mortar strength, sand and color right is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that does damage.

What you get

Done right, from the first walk-through

01

Right depth

Failed mortar is removed to sound material, never just surface-deep.

02

Matched mortar

Strength, color and sand are chosen to suit the masonry.

03

Packed in layers

Mortar goes in thin layers so it bonds and cures well.

04

Tooled to match

Joint profile matches the original or sheds water better.

FAQ

Common questions about tuckpointing

How do I know my mortar needs replacing?

Signs include sand-like crumbs on the ground, gaps you can push a key into, loose brick and damp walls.

What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?

People use the words loosely. Repointing is replacing failed mortar, and tuckpointing adds a thin contrasting line for a decorative effect.

Will the new mortar match the old?

We make test samples so you can approve the color and texture before we start.
