Retaining Walls

A retaining wall fights gravity and water every day, and the difference between one that lasts and one that leans is almost all hidden. We cut a trench to depth, build a compacted stone leveling pad, stack the wall with a slight setback, backfill with clean gravel, run a perforated drain pipe to daylight and add geogrid layers where the height calls for them.

We build walls in natural stone, segmental block, poured concrete faced with stone and brick, from low garden borders to tall tiered terraces. Many Middle Tennessee yards slope, and in Nashville the clay soil holds water, so drainage behind the wall is the most important detail. Taller walls may need engineering and a permit, and we help you check what applies.

What you get

Done right, from the first walk-through

01

Solid base

A compacted stone pad carries the first course.

02

Drainage behind the wall

Clean gravel and a drain pipe let water out before it pushes.

03

Reinforced when needed

Geogrid ties tall walls back into the soil.

04

Finished tops

Caps and corners give the wall a clean line.

The process

How your service comes together

  1. 1

    Measure and plan

We study the slope, the soil and the water, and agree on height, material and style.

  2. 2

We cut the trench, set the pad and stack the wall with backfill and drains.

  3. 3

    Cap and finish

We set the caps, grade the soil behind and clean the work.

FAQ

Common questions about retaining walls

How high can a retaining wall be before it needs engineering?

That depends on local rules and soil. Many places require engineering above a few feet, and we help you check before we design.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Most failures come from water building up behind the wall or an inadequate base. Good drainage and a solid pad prevent both.

Which material should I choose for my wall?

It depends on the height, the look and the site. We compare natural stone, block and faced concrete and explain the differences.
