Historic Masonry Restoration

Old masonry was built to breathe. Soft historic brick and lime mortar move moisture in and out, and modern hard Portland-based mortars can trap water and damage the brick. We study the original, test the mortar and choose lime-based mixes that work with the building instead of against it.

Our work includes repointing in lime mortar, replacing damaged units with matching salvage, repairing cornices, arches and parapets and cleaning with the gentlest methods that work. Around Nashville and across the towns of Middle Tennessee, courthouses, churches, storefronts and homes have stood for generations, and restoration should help them stand for generations more.

FAQ

Common questions about historic restoration

Why can't I just use regular mortar on old brick?

Modern cement mortars are harder than old brick and can crack it. Lime-based mortar is softer and lets the wall breathe.

Do you work with historic commissions?

We can provide the details and documentation they ask for.

How do you clean old brick?

We start with the gentlest method, such as low-pressure water, and test a small area first.
