Concrete Block & CMU Walls

Concrete masonry units are the backbone of many structures. We stand block walls on solid footings, lay them in level, plumb courses, place steel rebar in the cores and fill the cores with grout where the design calls for it. The result is a strong wall that takes loads and resists weather.

Block is also the base for many finishes. We build block cores for stone-clad fireplaces and outdoor kitchens, block walls for garages and storage buildings, and block foundations and retaining structures, and we leave the surface ready for veneer, stucco, parging or paint. Mortar joints are tooled for the finish that will follow.

Common questions about block walls

Do block walls need rebar?

Most structural block walls do, with steel in the cores and grout around it. The design depends on the wall height, loads and local code.

Can block be covered with stone or stucco?

Yes. Block is a common base for stone veneer, brick veneer and stucco, and we prepare it for the finish that follows.

Are block walls waterproof?

Block absorbs water, so exterior walls need proper coatings or finishes and good drainage. We plan those along with the wall.
